Pregnancy and childbirth can cause significant changes to a woman’s body. Although the changes that may occur to the abdominal area and the size and shape of the breasts are well-known, another common issue that is nonetheless discussed less often is vaginal laxity. This can have a negative impact on a woman’s overall quality of life. Furthermore, chronological aging itself can cause laxity of vaginal tissues, just as it does to the skin of the face and the rest of the body. Votiva® from our Chicago-based practice is a highly effective non-surgical tightening treatment that heats the vaginal lining to promote reconstruction of collagen and elastin, enhance blood circulation, and improve moisture.
Since many people are hesitant to discuss changes to the vaginal area, as well as treatments to help, questions may go unasked and unanswered. One aspect of this procedure that patients are often curious about is what recovery will be like.
There is no recovery time needed after this radiofrequency treatment, although there may be some activity restrictions. Votiva® procedures are usually well-tolerated by patients, and they are typically performed without anesthesia. Additionally, patients won’t need to take medications after the treatment in most cases. Patients usually experience little to no discomfort, and side effects are minor. Potential side effects include mild redness, tenderness, swelling, vaginal discharge, spotting, and cramping.
Patients may be able to have sexual intercourse and engage in exercise on the same day that they have this procedure. Since the treatment promotes the production of collagen, the tightening of the internal tissues occurs gradually, and noticeable results may only be apparent within around one month. As opposed to surgical vaginal rejuvenation options, Votiva® is a more discrete procedure that won’t involve incisions or tissue scarring. The results are usually best after a series of three treatments. Patients will usually need to have maintenance treatments every four to 12 months. Future pregnancies and childbirth may alter the results.
