Dr. John Q. Cook performs a wide range of plastic surgery procedures on patients each year, but one of his favorites is the structural breast lift. The Chicago-based plastic surgeon developed this technique in order to give patients beautiful, natural-looking, long-lasting results when it comes to their breast position and shape.

A typical breast lift elevates sagging breasts by removing excess skin. Since stretched-out tissue allows breasts to be pulled downward by gravity, simply excising the redundant skin addresses the resulting drooping—but in an inelegant way. Dr. Cook’s advanced breast lift improves upon the traditional technique in multiple ways.

Breast tissue itself can become “loose” over time, especially if the patient has gone through pregnancy or has lost significant weight. The fluctuations in volume over time can cause once-compact breasts to “spread out.” A typical lift does little to nothing to directly address this spread, while the structural technique “recompacts” the tissues to make the breasts firm again.

Narrowing the base of the breast is a desirable goal with a lift, but this outcome is difficult to achieve via conventional lifting methods. Dr. Cook’s structural technique makes the narrowing easier, helping him to create a more sculpted look. When paired with his ability to rearrange breast tissue to emphasize upper pole volume, this technique gives the breasts a fuller appearance—all without the insertion of implants.

The incision Dr. Cook uses is also a surgical aspect that sets his technique apart. Instead of terminating in a straight vertical line that cuts across the fold beneath the breast, he curves the line outward, toward the side of the body. Not only does this result in less of a “bunched” look once healed, it also gives him ample access for his work in sculpting and narrowing to shape the breast and help the upper pole appear fuller.

Finally, a key aspect of the structural breast lift is right there in the name. Dr. Cook anchors tissue at key points deep in the breast in order to create long-lasting support for the desired shape and position. The anchoring provides reliable stability so that new stretching and drooping is not the inevitability it can be for patients who merely have extra skin removed to tighten the breasts.

Note that, as with typical breast lift strategies, Dr. Cook’s structural lift reduces overly large areolae and repositions downward-pointing nipples as necessary.
