Hyaluronic fillers such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Perlane® have been used as facial fillers at a more superficial level in millions of people worldwide. Voluma® has the same simple building block molecule (hyaluronic acid) as these other fillers. - THE MATERIAL THAT VOLUMA® IS MADE OF IS NATURALLY PRESENT IN MOST OF THE TISSUES OF THE BODY.
Hyaluronic acid is found in many tissues including the skin. If functions as a natural lubricant and shock absorber. It helps to keep our skin moist and supple. One of the reasons that our skin becomes drier and thinner as we age is that there is a reduced amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin after age 30. If for some reason a patient desires removal of Voluma® this can be accomplished with a simple injection of a material known as hyaluronidase. The chains of sugar molecules that make up Voluma® are hooked together in a way that makes them firmer that other hyaluronic injectibles currently available in the United States. New medical devices and materials tend to be expensive due to development and regulatory costs associated with FDA approval. This makes Voluma® more expensive on a per syringe basis than the materials we have been using up to now. This is at least partially offset by the fact that Voluma® lasts longer.
